Las microondas y otros campos electromagnéticos de baja frecuencia (CEM) se ha demostrado que actúan activando los canales de calcio dependientes de voltaje (VGCCs). La mayor parte de los efectos biológicos se deben a la modificación del calcio intracelular, elevándose los niveles de óxido nítrico y formándose peroxinitrito: el desequilibrio de lo que se denomina Ciclo NO/ONOO, -cuyo centro es el óxido nítrico y su derivado el peligroso peroxinitrito. A pesar de la gran cantidad de estudios que hablan de los efectos biológicos producidos por las microondas y la elevación del calcio intracelular, cifrándose en más de 20.000 documentos, las normas internacionales sobre seguridad no establecen criterios sobre estos riesgos biológicos.

Estas normas se basan en la falsa suposición de que los efectos de las microondas y a otros campos electromagnéticos tienen sólo unos efectos de aumento de la temperatura. Pues bien, todos los cambios biológicos recogidos en gran cantidad de estudios se pueden explicar ahora en función de
un nuevo paradigma: la acción de los campos electromagnéticos y la activación de los canales de calcio dependientes de voltaje:
estrés oxidativo,
rotura de la doble cadena de ADN celular, rotura de la barrera hematoencefálica, reducción de los niveles de melatonina y su efecto sobre el sueño, cáncer, infertilidad masculina y femenina, disfunción del sistema inmune, disfunción neurológica, disfunción cardíaca, incluyendo taquicardias, arritmias y muerte súbita por ataque cardíaco.Se propone un programa en dos fases para la mejora de los estándares de seguridad sobre los campos electromagnéticos.
